If My Firm Offered a Cooking Class, I’d Sign Up

There’s a bit of a brouhaha over Latham & Watkins’s upcoming canapé-making class sponsored by its Women Enriching Business Group. At the very least, the get-together could be worth a few chortles just to observe more senior lawyers’ cooking skills. But for the less cynical, the event could be productive. It sure beats signing up for the firm softball team when you’re still cringing from the memory of having struck out four times in the fifth grade championship. So, ladies, stuff a few mushrooms, microwave some crab dip, knock back some wine, and have a good time. And if you don’t get any career advancement or a new client from the effort, toast yourselves for indulging in an off-beat firm activity. And should you get laid off? Well, remember where Martha Stewart found opportunity after she left the brokerage business.
