The Good Wife’s Teachable Moments

When I was studying for the bar exam, I would take a break from the intensity by watching old TV reruns and identifying various legal scenarios. I Love Lucy was my favorite for this little digression where I mostly got to practice my knowledge of torts. Oh, Ethel, oh, Lucy, oh duty, breach, causation, damage. Picking apart the legal consequences of various amusing television scenarios is a habit I haven’t been able to shake in all the years since I passed the bar.

The Good Wife: Not Such a Good Law Office Manager

Law office management students seeking to reinforce their own learning in a lighthearted way can enjoy CBS’s The Good Wife—a show that is engaging on many levels—even as  title character Alicia Florrick (played by Julianna Margulies) seems to be not especially good at handling her business. The office of Florrick Agos is in a perpetual state of renovation; there’s hardly any privacy or security; clients can see each other, hear each other’s business; anyone can get into the space; nonlawyers pipe in with their legal opinions in front of lawyers who theoretically are running meetings; a name partner is in jail. If anything, this particular fictional law firm reinforces the need for quality law office management.
