During
Richard Nixon’s presidency, Congress, by joint resolution, designated the third
Sunday in June as Father’s Day. In a
proclamation, President Nixon observed that “In fatherhood we know the
elemental magic and joy of humanity.”
Proclamation No. 4127, 26 Stat. 1629 (1972).
The
Father’s Day law urges people to offer “public and private expressions of …
abiding love and gratitude” toward their fathers on this day. Originally
codified at 36 U.S.C. § 142a, the law was modified slightly in 1998 and is now
found at 36 U.S.C. § 109 (2014).
So .
. . celebrate Father’s Day. It’s the law.
